Reframing the design process as a toolbox
Nowadays, every UX case study places an overwhelming emphasis on the process. While design processes are great, they aren’t meant to be followed to the dot.
Historically, UX is rooted in graphic design. To separate UX from graphic design, the UX industry started evangelizing processes: user interviews. storyboard. user persona. sketch. wireframe. prototype from low to high fidelity.
It’s safe to say it’s exhaustive and misleading; not all steps are essential for every project. The truth is it depends.
Rather than viewing processes as a step-by-step manual for Ikea furniture, try reframing each step as a tool in our toolbox.
We use tools only when necessary. Ultimately, the product is what matters.
